NAOMI’S HEAD FELT AS though it was going to burst. The doctor had said that she’d given it a knock when she fell down the stairs but hadn’t done any other damage. The MRI had proved that. As she was being wheeled out of X-ray a nurse came up to the trolley.

‘There’s a gentleman who wants to see you,’ she said. ‘Do you feel up to visitors?’

Naomi’s heart skipped a beat. Another nurse had told her that a man was waiting and when she asked who, the nurse had described Sean. Naomi had no idea why he was here but she was delighted.

‘Tell him I’d love to see him, thank you.’

They wheeled her into a cubicle to wait for a bed on the ward. The doctor had insisted that it was hospital policy that anyone who had been knocked out for as long as she had, even though the MRI was clear, had to spend a night in hospital under observation. Just a precaution, he’d added.

As the curtain drew back, she held her breath and flashed what she hoped was her best smile.

‘Hi Babe,’ it was Rick. Her heart plummeted. ‘The nurse said how pleased you were to see me.”

‘Go away, Rick. I was expecting someone else. You’re the last person I want to see now or any other time.’

‘Come on, Nay,’ he said as he seated himself. ‘Admit it – you need me to look after you.’

Naomi could feel her temper rising and with it the pain in her head increased. ‘Get out Rick, leave me alone. Anyway, how did you know that I was here?’

‘I left my details at reception the night your mum died and so they assumed I was your next of kin and phoned me.’

‘Get out.’

‘How can I leave you alone when you obviously can’t look after yourself?’

‘Go, Rick!’ and she pushed the button to summon the nurse.

‘Be nice, Babe. Give me the keys to your mum’s place and I’ll go and clean it up for you. Then we can take that holiday we talked about.’

The curtains drew back and a nurse appeared. ‘Can I help you?’

‘Yes,’ said Naomi. ‘Make this man go.’

‘And how do you intend to do that?’ Rick smiled, thinking he’d won.

The nurse turned and called, ‘Officer. I believe you wanted to speak to Miss Weston? You can come in now.’

A policeman walked into the cubicle. ‘Okay,’ said Rick, ‘I’ll go. But this isn’t the end of it. You’ll realise you need me soon.’ He pushed past the policeman and left.

‘What a creep,’ exclaimed the nurse. ‘You alright dear? I’m sure this officer will wait if you need a little time to recover. You look quite pale.’

‘No. I’m fine, really.’

‘You sure?’ the policeman asked. ‘I can go and have words with him.’

‘No.’ Naomi was adamant.

The nurse left and the officer sat down waiting for Naomi to go over everything she could remember about the assault.
